Ahhhhh!
We slept!
And when I say we...I mean all three of us...and we slept all because of the smallest one of us!
First, I went home immediately after work yesterday and was asleep by 10 a.m. I napped until 12:30, thanks to our babysitter! Then, Kate had a great feed and went right to sleep last night at 7 which is when I went to bed too. We heard NOTHING from her until I woke her at 1 a.m. for her feed, and then she went right back to sleep and Jon heard NOTHING from her until 6:30!!!! We are SO excited! But...we're learning not to think this is a trend...just a lucky night. Now, if we could just do something about Kate pooping up her back every morning for daddy...any suggestions?
In other news, I had been invited to my good friend's new restaurant tomorrow night with a bunch of people. Well...they couldn't get a table until after 9 p.m., so I'm declining the invite. WAY too late for me these days! I'd fall asleep in my plate of oysters that I was planning to order!
Happy weekend!

I Woke Up Crying...
at 11:45 last night. I just want sleep.
We have apparently taken two steps forward, and two steps back as far as the sleep is concerned. Kate isn't napping well during the day, and therefore, is waking frequently during the night. So if Kate doesn't nap, then mommy doesn't nap, and that makes mommy crazy when she is awakened 45 minutes before her alarm for work. Poor Jon, he felt so badly for me. He went into her room and I didn't hear anything for about 5 minutes. I got up and walked in and there he was holding her and swaying back and forth...she was falling back to sleep. He has a wonderful touch with her...we (Kate and I) are so lucky. He's exhausted too. She's been waking up with a back full of poop at 5 every morning. Then she smiles, kicks and coos until it's time to eat at 7, so he's not going back to sleep either.
So today, I have the babysitter...which means I have appointments scheduled. Well, I've cancelled them all so that I can go home and sleep until 1 which is when she leaves. So, if you're reading this: DON'T CALL ME! Cuz I'm braindead enough right now to forget to turn off the ringer! Wish me luck sleeping.

My dolly
I started sleeping with a doll the other night. I hug her close all night long...and yeah I feel a bit silly, but it's for a good reason.
On Saturday night, I am going out to dinner with friends at my one friend's new restaurant. I went a few weeks ago to the grand opening and Jon stayed home and put Kate to bed. Well, it was the first time that mommy wasn't the one to put her to bed, so Jon had a few issues. So, when the invite came to go back to the restaurant to actually try the food, Jon insisted I go despite the potential issues with putting Kate to bed. So this time, we're determined it'll be different (we hope). The doll I'm sleeping with this week is stuffed with some kind of wool that picks up and keeps a scent. So, it's suggested that a mother sleep with the doll for a few days to get her scent on the doll and then when mommy isn't around, the doll can be used for comfort. It is said that by giving the doll to the baby, she'll think mommy is near...or think the doll is mommy...or whatever. I think Kate is smarter than that, but we'll try it anyway. Plus, I'm suggesting to Jon that he wear my bathrobe when feeding her the nighttime bottle (funny mental image for sure). He is so patient with her and so kind to encourage me to go out with my friends. I am truly lucky.

Awwww Yeaaahhhh
Ok, so I gotta brag. Today, February 24 2009...a mere three months, three weeks and one day since giving birth...I, the writer of this blog.....AM WEARING MY PRE-PREGNANCY PANTS!!!!!
That's right, folks...and they're not even held together with safety pins and they're not stretch material. They. just. fit. YEAH!
In other news: we've had a bit of a setback with Kate's sleep. For some reason she got all whacked out of her nap schedule on Sunday and we've had a hard time getting her back on schedule. Let me tell you, it was frustrating for us both yesterday. She usually takes a late afternoon nap...usually between 4:30 and 5 for about a half hour. Well, that didn't happen yesterday, so by 5:45 she was out of her mind tired. So, I took her upstairs and rocked her and read her stories to calm her down and she drifted off. Well, I still had to put her jammies on, so I carefully moved her to the changing table where she immediately woke up and started smiling at me. Ugh. Wide awake. She finally was quiet in her crib about 7, but then woke (we think because of the wind) at 8 for about 5 minutes and then was quiet until I fed her at 12:45. I hope she slept the rest of the night for daddy. We'll see. Hopefully today she'll get back on track with the long morning nap, but we have the sitter today and she's learning that the sitter ISN'T mommy or daddy...so it's been a little rough in that department too.
Wish us luck.

Ouch!
I started running again.
Ouch.
Actually, the run felt good, but today I'm sore. It'll all get better soon. After all...spring is coming and I want to wear my cute clothes I didn't get to wear last spring!

Friday Makes It All Better

The baby woke up fussing at midnight...and again at 10 after....and again at quarter after. Jon got her the first two times, but I ended up getting up for the day after the third cry. She was hungry. It was a half hour before I normally get up, but it's Friday, so it's all better.
Then I got to work and spilled my MUCH needed coffee all over my producer's printer. We laughed, cuz well...it's Friday (and there was fresh coffee in the kitchen).
I even ate a calorie-laden bagel from Panera...cuz it's Friday. Well, who am I kidding, I would've downed one of those any day.
Happy Friday! (oh and enjoy the picture of Kate in her new jumper....she loved it)!

Vivid Dreams
I'll start with what happened yesterday in real life. See, I have this AWESOME (sarcasm intended) schedule so usually I am sportin' a huge lack o' sleep feeling each day. I ALWAYS change Kate before a feeding. Well apparently, I must have forgotten to change her at 3 before she ate. There is no WAY she could've peed that much in two hours. So here's what happened...I had her in her swing for her little late day cat-nap and when I picked her up about 5:30 to play, she was SOAKED through her little pants. I felt SO bad. She just looked up at me and smiled.
So then, last night...I had another abandonment dream about her. It's the same situation dream that I've had before...I go somewhere with her in the car and I "run in" for a minute and then get stuck inside doing something (last night it was working on a story at CBS) and then when I come out to the car I realize that I've left her in the car and start to freak out only to find that child services has rescued her and I'm arrested. It's an awful dream. I wake up with a broken heart in fear that I've failed her.
This morning when I went into her room to feed her before work, she looked up at me and smiled and I knew that she really doesn't feel abandoned. But ugh, what a rough dream!

Out of Sorts
Poor Kate. She was all out of sorts for most of the day yesterday. After the great pizza oven burn-off of 2009 (see previous post), and therefore not getting much sleep Monday night, she was pretty fussy yesterday with the sitter. Jon and I are still not sure what was up with her...but whatever was wrong made her poop. A lot. She seemed to be back to normal after her afternoon nap for the most part and went to bed after a nice warm bath last night with no trouble. Maybe her tummy was troubled? It's so hard to know what's bothering her and we feel so bad when she's clearly not happy. She's not a crybaby so when she cries, it's for a reason. Ugh. It's tough. There is, however, no better feeling than picking up your crying baby and knowing that just your touch or just you holding her calms her down. I will NEVER tire of that.
On a totally un-related note: the new Kashi TLC cereal bars ROCK THE HOUSE! All natural, no sugary sweet taste and YUMMY! I just tried one for the first time this morning and they blow the Nutri-Grain bars out of the water!

Stinky House=Awake Baby
I'll start from the beginning on this one...
I just didn't feel like cooking dinner last night. So, I threw together some awful concoction made of numerous questionably fresh leftovers and chucked it in the microwave for me to eat. For Jon, I defrosted a Boboli pizza crust and made him a pizza so he could throw it in the oven when he got home. I decided to put the pizza stone in the oven for him (cuz you have to have a cold oven to put it in). Big mistake. I forgot, that when you put the stone in the oven and jack the temperature up to 450°, the WHOLE HOUSE smells like burning pizza oven. Not conducive to sleep. I woke up at 10 smelling it, and the baby was up shortly after. I heard her again at midnight and since my alarm goes off at 12:45, I let her coo to herself for a while. As I listened to her cooing I heard a pause....then a blast of poo...then more cooing. Very cute. But, she still didn't sleep. Jon just sent me a text and said he had a restless night too. Poor guy. It wasn't his fault the whole house smelled....I just won't have him use the pizza stone again.

I Had to Post...
Sleeeeeeepp!
In the now 3 full weeks since I've been back to work, Jon and I have been sort-of banging our heads against the wall trying to figure out Katie's sleep patterns and getting her on a schedule. We've learned (and books have told us) that she will develop her own nap schedule, and it's up to us to encourage her sleep. We've learned that sleep during the day=sleep at night and early bedtimes=full nights of sleep. In these 3 weeks, (well 4 weeks really because we practiced the week before I went back) we have been more sleep-deprived than we were when she was a newborn. BUT, I'm pleased to report that our persistence is starting to pay off.
We started by creating a bedtime routine for her. This is a pretty strict bedtime (7 p.m.) and we have sacrificed our sacred dinners out on the weekends to foster this routine (we now have entered the world of carryout). She took to the routine and bedtime pretty well, and now...drumroll please...she has started to take a 2 hour morning nap! Ideally, I want her to nap like that in the afternoon, so I can sleep too...but we'll just have to wait for that to develop too. She shows signs of sleepiness around 8:45 a.m. and so we put her in her crib and she's usually out until just before her 11 a.m. feed. It's GREAT! She chose the time when she was ready and we're hoping she does the same for the p.m. nap.
The best part of all of this is that she is giving us nights here and there where she sleeps straight through. Friday night was one of those nights....and let me say that by Friday, we're both cashed out so it was a welcome, welcome surprise. She was SO tired so I put her down at 6:45 p.m. and she didn't wake until 5 a.m.! We both woke at 3 and checked on her and then went back to sleep until 5. We felt like a million bucks on Saturday! Saturday night, however, she woke at 1:30 (her usual time) to be fed, so we're not over the nighttime feeding hurdle yet. While this feeding time seems like murder for most of you, it's actually perfect for me...I'm able to feed her right before I leave for work. This morning, I came in to find her at the foot of her crib (we place her in the middle), rotated 90°, on her side with her thumb in her mouth. Another reason why we're willing to risk her being a little chilly instead of covering her with a blanket.
Ok, I realize this post isn't really funny, but the above has made things so much easier, I thought I'd share!

Farty McBabygas
We are seriously considering changing Kate's name to Farty McBabygas.
Poor thing. It's not her fault. I have been lax in my care of what I eat lately. I mean, really I've been fairly lax since the beginning because I want Kate to get used to all foods. I'm not avoiding broccoli, onions and garlic as most books suggest, and she's been o.k. with it so far. However lately, my garlic eating has seemed to upset her little tummy. On Sunday night, the salad dressing I made was extra garlicky (by mistake). By Monday morning at 4 a.m., she was in a hard-core fuss which got Jon up and kept him up. When I got home, I gave her some Mylecon and she was better. Last night, I cooked the garlic in my chicken marsala thinking that it wouldn't be as bad. But when I went into her room to feed her this morning before work, she was awake and sucking on her fingers. She looked up at me and farted, and then smiled. So, another dose of Mylecon was given. I hope she feels ok...poor thing. I guess I need to be more careful. At least at this rate we won't have a fussy eater. She'll be the only kid on the block who eats brussel sprouts!

New Video
Ok, so since I've been a slacker and only posted this on facebook, here's the latest video of our cute kid.
Blog Guilt

Ok ok...I am SOOOO sorry it's been WAY too long since I've entered a real post. I am back, though and hope to keep the blog going strong now that I'm ... gasp...back at work.
I'm not going to go on and on about what's been happening lately...obviously, my life has been consumed by the amazing being known as Kate...but here are a few details to recap:
1. Kate is now 3 months 1 week and two days old and she is more and more incredible each day.
2. I have become addicted to Facebook. It is crack. Don't get sucked in if you haven't already.
3. My weight on the scale is only 5 pounds off of my pre-pregnancy weight. So why don't my pants fit yet?
4. Kate has a babysitter who comes on Tuesday and Thursday mornings so mommy doesn't have to rush home from work and so I can nap or go to the gym. It's working out well.
5. As I mentioned above, I am back to work. Let me tell you, it's rough. I love being back, but the schedule is murder. I am now getting up at 12:45 a.m. to nurse Kate before I hop into the shower and go to work by 2. Kate isn't a great napper yet, so I rarely get some shut-eye during the day. I'm also going to bed later than I was pre-Kate. She goes to sleep at 7 p.m. (we have a half hour routine before that...bath, jammies, story, massage, etc.), so I can be asleep shortly after, but it just isn't enough.
6. I have discovered new love for my husband. Not that I didn't love him before, but the way he is with Kate makes me a thousand percent happy in so many ways. It is truly amazing, the love I feel for the two of them. He gets her up each morning (cuz I'm at work) and dresses her and feeds her and the two of them have developed quite a bond. He LOVES his mornings with her...it's so cute. I am so lucky.
SO, now that you're semi-updated, here starts the blog as it was...with daily anecdotes:
Yesterday was near 70°...IN FEBRUARY! So our little friend Libby and her mommy came over and we went for a REALLY long and REALLY hilly walk (glutes are sore today). It was the first time that I had Kate outside without a winter hat on and she LOVED the feeling of the wind in her hair. She had her little sunglasses on and kept them on the whole time. She loved the walk.
We also got to meet the newest neighbor on the block...Logan Michael Bock. He was born on Sunday...yes this past Sunday...and his mommy and daddy had him out for a walk. Amazing! He is so cute and I can't wait until he's old enough for us to all play. He also has more hair than I've ever seen on a baby. Way cute. I'll effort a picture so I can post it.
Ok, well that's it for now. I am back on the blog bandwagon...I hope you'll forgive me for my absence.
